Moving from Apogee 3X3 to: Kf650, SLS960 or....?
« on: February 20, 2011, 12:23:00 PM »

Hi All,

I want to move from my Apogee 3X3 cabinets to something with less weight. What other options do I have beside the EAW KF650 and the community SLS960 ?

Thanks for your input

How does your system usually get used? What are the functional requirements of the system? There are not that many choices that get as loud as a 3x3, but there are a lot that sound better and weigh less. What would be good for you depends entirely on how they will be used. Do you want to keep the separate amp racks, or would you just as soon have a system with internal amps to save more weight?

The system is mostly used for smaal outdoor events; 1500 - 2000 people. The 3x3 `s are used together with Apogee AE-15 subs.  We use 3 tops and 3 subs per side.

Back then 10 years ago we paid like $2750.oo per box (new).

I was also loking at the Danley boxes, still waiting on a reply from them. SH-50 or SH-46

I'll toss in the Martin W8c as an option.  Not quite as loud (3dB lower for continuous and peak) but 100 pounds per cabinet lighter.  Very tight and clean sounding.  Still tri-amped and fully horn loaded.

There tri-amp or bi-amp remember... we have just installed 10 stacks of this into a London nightclub all runnning off VZ5000's :) lovely lovely sounding system but just isn't that loud (bang for buck + size, weight VS output) when you start to compare it to newer systems around these days...

I used to mix on a 3x3 rig. It was normally 3 tops over 2-3 AE-12 subs. Great sounding rig.
I don't miss lugging it around though.

You'll pay more than that to replace them. Take a look at the Nexo Alpha. It is a 2 box solution, each 3x3 would be replaced by an M8 mid/hi pack and a B1 bass module, but it would probably get louder, and certainly sound better. With 75º horizontal coverage, maybe you only need 2 per side. If you want to stay with 3 per side, maybe the M3 35º mid/high pack would be the ticket. To add Nexo subs you would use the S2.

This is a great sounding system. Much better than the 3x3.

Also bare in mind that the Nexo Alpha system is one of the most rider systems around and theres a lot of it around so subbing more in wouldn't be a problem for you.
