"Any level to Any level" DI
« on: November 10, 2006, 11:09:36 AM »

Hi all,
I'm looking for an interface device for comuter recording of audio. The scenario is:

Line or Mic level out of mixer into a desktop PC's soundcard. The input on the desktop PC is either a mic or a line in.

I'm looking for some type of "swiss army" DI that will allow me to go from both mic or line level out of the mixer to mic or a line level at the computers 3.5mm input.

Thanks in advance.

Hey John,

I think that you will find the standard audio I/O on most computers is pretty much crap.  If you need to get the audio out of them, the heaphone output may be far more predictable.  The mic is on most machines was designed for interface with a toy headset mic.

I suggest that you take a look at any of the small USB powered devices as a simple and dependable interface that you can use with multiple machines.  My favorite at the moment is the Lexicon ones.  Note that with a USB powered device, you need not much else as you can send mic or line both to a from and without the bag full of adapters!

Ken,
Thanks for the reply. I'm looking for a "swiss army knife" type of interface device for use with desktop computer mic or line inputs. The mixers and computers could be any make and model. The application is room recording in corporate breakout rooms. USB is not an option. Thanks

I hope I'm not too late to help.  Take a look at this little toy: http://www.sounddevices.com/products/usbpremaster.htm  We use this baby to interface SMAART with a laptop.  Works just fine...

USB is not an option.
but this seems to indicate pretty clearly that the USBPre would not be a viable option.
