Wedge Fest 2006 Wrapup
« on: September 11, 2006, 08:23:35 PM »

I'm a little slow posting this since I had a bunch to do after the end of the event and I seem to have contracted the black plague. However, I would like to thank the attendees of Wedge Fest who all made the event a tremendous success:

Joe Aquilato
Paul Bell
Mike Butler
John Chiara
Dave Dermont
Trace Knight
Jeff Knorr
James Ribar
Geoff Smyton
Rob Spence
Paul Tucci
Craig (from EM Acoustics)

I would also like to thank the manufacturers that made this possible by sending me gear:

Soundcraft
Camco
Ashly
FBT
Community
ADR Audio
Radian
Assistance Audio
Adamson
Dolby
PowerSoft
EM Acoustics
McCauley

And, of course, last but certainly not least, Mark, Sarah, Daniel, and the rest of the crew at ProSoundWeb.com for making this whole thing happen! I couldn't do it without you guys.

So now the real reason you read this thread, photos:
http://www.campuspa.com/images/wedgefest/

Those are edited down from the over 500 shots that were actually taken. Photo credit goes to me and James Ribar. Mike Butler will have his video up later.

Make sure to follow the Road Test forum for more on each wedge, since I sent them all home with someone. If you'd like to give a wedge a listen, let me know and we'll put you in line to test it and review it.

I will risk putting my foot in my mouth and post my notes from the event. Please note that these are probably totally unfair and should be taken with a grain of salt... we didn't do exhaustive testing my any means and really spent most of our time listening to music and voices through wedges and then seeing how well they handled serious sonic abuse.

Much more useful detail pertaining to each wedge will be available in the Road Test forum, since I sent each and every wedge I could home with someone.

Interesting notes. Where I have experience with a wedge, I agree with your assessments. Mostly.

Regarding D&B's M4SM: can you explain what you mean by "proprietary in every way"? Just curious.

I wonder if MacPherson's old LPX mon would have been able to hold a candle to McCauley's SM950. The 1000w LPX (1991-ish?) was a wake up call signalling that my employer's biamped proprietary wedges were no longer cutting edge. That sucker had gain for days on a standard SM58.

Wish I could have been there! My Boston gig has been exactly as boring as I had expected and every bit as time consuming. Sad

Cheers!

The one we had was shipped with a propriatary DSP built into a proprietary amp that I didn't take apart because it wasn't my deal... Dunno about the components. Kind of a black box that made very nice noise.

Sorry you couldn't have been there, too. We'll hook up one of these days, promise.

Allright...You never said ANYTHING about free bright blue t-shirts,pens, & brown irish beer! That could have made the drive from naptown worthwhile.
JK, Seriously, thanks for the non-biased input and comments. I usually hear all of that from reps.

I too would like to thank our sponsors at PSW! A good time was had by all and we've connected some faces to some names here on The Lab. I would be interested in more of these shootouts.

As the McCauley guy on site, the SM72, a 12 X 2 box, was from my rental stock and I asked that the Powersoft amp be "opened up" to see what it would do. The speaker was seeing past 1,000 watts. I thought the CD would go first. It did get loud, maybe it would've gone a little longer in bi-amp mode.

I would agree with the results text on how all the speakers faired, the D&B certainly sounded very fine. The EM boxes were good too. As a side note, the McCauley SM950 was the only three way there, 15 X 10 X 2.

Mike, it was a pleasure to find out that all the hype about the MicroWedges is true. Thanks for getting them out to me. Trace Knight has them and will take them out on tour for awhile for you in order to get a little more coverage, and then hopefully we'll pass them onto someone else for a second opinion before getting them back to you.

Bennett,

That looked like a whole lot of fun!  Man, I'm disappointed I couldn't make it.  If you guys do this next year or even sooner, I will definitely make every effort to come out.

It's weird sitting in a quiet room looking at those pictures of a wedge and a meter reading 140dB.  My brain is telling me to plug my ears!

Congrats on what looks like a successful event.  Here's to hoping this kind of think can be an annual or even biannual thing.

Edit: Note to self, learn to spell.

Guys, I had a blast, and let me tell ya, my ears aren't even ringing anymore, (gee did I lose that freq too)? Anyways, it was a gas, and everyone who didn't show up, got to miss a hell of a great time, networking and camaraderie, including the antique store tour, more on this tidbit later kids!

I'd like to thank all the sponsors, and suppliers for a great time, and the food and cute waitress next door wern't to shappy either, and a personal thanks to Mark and his remote hospitality.

I got the cute little microwedges back to the shop safe and sound, although my bus is not too happy, ? what happens when a 32klb bus meets a ford escort broadside? You guessed it, the ford loses big time...........

I was on my way home, minding my own biz, jamming to Man O War, appropriative "blow your speakers" when this douche-bag along side of me fell asleep at the wheel in the hi speed lane, after bouncing off the rail a few times in my mirror, I see him coming my way, I quickly react, and as he turns right, yea, a right hand turn at 70mph in front of 32,000 lbs of steel, I plowed into him broadside, shoving him a 100 yards or so down I-90 wb, finally spinning him on his roof and sending him into a ditch.......he also make an expence free trip to the local hospital,no idea of his condition, but he was awake and pee'd his pants, pictures of his junker to follow ( mikeyp, i need your help here)anyways, I'm ok, the bus is about 3k in damage, had to wait till daylight to finish the drive home, had no markers or turners working, got them going in the morning, and came home to fire these little baby's up for the russian.........he was very pleased, will take em out next week, and try to abuse them some more with some , how do you say, ludicrous loud vocals

more later, and next time, let see if we can squeeze 40 into a vw
tknight
