Pictures from an Outdoor Show (Part 1)
« on: August 06, 2006, 10:15:20 PM »

I thought the following shots from my first larger outdoor event would be interesting. There were pro photographers on the ground and in the air that gave me a CD full of stuff of which I’ve culled out some of my favorites. This was a concert/drama/ministry thing at a large high school in GA. I hope he doesn’t mind – but Craig Leerman is the main guy responsible for getting me to a point where I could understand enough about lighting to get me off and running. I actually enjoy it now –  what a difference a well lit show makes. I hate to admit it, but it ain’t all about sound.

I love my fly towers – variable height, indoors or out, huge improvement in sound:

Almost one year later my only employee, Luke, is still hanging in there. This guy rocks:

Nicely balanced sound nearly to the furthest seat in the stands:

Langston, nice setup. You are right about the lighting, it looks good. I wonder about the aiming of the speaker arrays though. It looks from the pics as if the top 3 boxes shoot over the top of the stands, and yet the audience only went about 10 rows back. It seems like you lost a lot of power by aiming the arrays so high. Is that what the EAW array calculator gave you?

You are exactly right - the promoters were _convinced_ that this free show would fill all the way to the top of the stands and nothing of the sort occurred. Much acoustic power was thrown away, but fortunately more than enough headroom was available given the genre of the evening. It was facinating to me that those little loudspeakers could reach the top seats with clarity, though the subs started thinning a bit about 3/4 the way up. There must have been some kind of helpful thermal gradient or whatever going on because the 8 boxes a side delivered good sound much further than the 200' limit that EAW suggests.

Way cool pics!  The photographers do a way better job that I ever had at a gig!  My pics of lighting usually come out too dark, or blurry.

Nice light rig.  I like how the stage roof, audio towers, and short  truss stands holding up the intels on stage are all made up of truss and have a unified look to them.

Great Job!

I'm so old, when I was doing FOH for Tommy Dorsey, to balance out the horn section I would slide their chairs downstage and upstage to mix!

In the first picture off to the right are those Community M-4s on the radio tower?

BTW, where is a picture with your smiling face in it?

Dude! I don't know nothin' about that 3 piece line-array on the radio tower!

As for my picture, modesty prevents me from displaying my front side:

Langston,

Are those towers the Camco towers?? If so, where'd you get
'em. If not, what are they, and where'd you get 'em??
