Have drivers and ply - need ideas..
« on: January 03, 2007, 04:59:44 PM »

I have 4 PD1850 drivers from Precision Devices a pile of 18mm birch ply and MDF sitting at my warehouse and an urge to make some sawdust.

Looking for ideas for a relatively compact VLF cab, preferrably single driver loaded ( portability issues ).

Main application is PA use, including use as Sub channel cabs for AV stuff in surround mode.

In other words: I dont need a lot of punch, just loads of rumbling Smile

PD driver specs: http://www.papl.co.uk/ShowDetails.asp?id=15

The obvious choice is the X1 from Speakerplans.com, but I am very open towards other ideas aswell

Any ideas?

My first idea is to save that MDF for making furniture, and use only the 18mm birch ply for the speaker cabs. MDF is twice the weight and 1/3 the strength of birch ply. I would think that's pretty important for portable speakers. Not such an issue for speakers used in cinema or other permanent installations.

The X1 doesn't list the 1850 as a recommended driver. The obvious choice is the 1850 horn on speakerplans, 4 should be pretty special, but maybe not drop as low as you'd want for AV. I reckon it would be close enough in extension to commercial theatres, and have better sound quality (if you guys over there have the same vented 18's as we get over here at the flicks)

Maybe use the MDF for interior bits, with the more rugged ply for the outside box.

The only reason I mentioned having MDF is that its good for prototyping for a few reasons; its easy to work with, and its dirt cheap..

I have some 1850 loaded X1s and they are brutal in their own eye-wobbling way... 1850horns are cool aswell, but as you mentioned they arent that great in singles ( stack of 30 of them could be dangerous Smile

More X1s are definately an option, but I wouldnt mind trying something unusual as I already have plenty of subs for the main PA rig..

The problem with the PD 1850 is it, being designed for horn loading.

It really offers no perks outside of horns, and the band-pass design of the X1.

So, the limiting factor is the speaker you are using. That’s why, Precision Devices offers the PD 186. It will take advantage of a larger cabinet and deliver a better low end response than the PD 1850.

Best Regards,
