I had a customer hand me a pagin horn and ask for a replacement.  On the back I noticed that it said 45 ohms, 7 watts.  I'm assuming that I must find another 45 ohm speaker to replace this one, and that a standard 70 volt speaker (8 or 16 ohms) may not be the ideal replacement.  Please correct me if I'm wrong, or assure me if I'm correct.

It's been awhile since I've run across that. They are used in talkback paging/intercom systems. A little Googling shows that Valcom has them.

This speaker is installed outdoors in a swimming pool area for paging and music playback.  They do not use it for any talkback applications (assuming that a 45 ohm talkback speaker may be more appropriate for those school classrooms)  So would a regular 8 ohm 70 volt speaker work ok for this application?

Before I say that it was probably something a sparky or handyman found and installed you are going to have to tell us what it is connected to. Is it connected to the 70 volt output of an amplifier or what? That's the only way you are going to know what to CORRECTLY replace it with. It would be highly unlikely from what you say that a 45 ohm speaker is correct.

It's simply connected to an 70 volt dist output on an amplifier.

I hope it can handle 111 watts and the amp can provide at least the same.  

The answer is obvious, replace it with a horn that has a 70 volt transformer. Now you know why it burned out.
