Pro DVD Players
« on: May 18, 2006, 09:26:29 am »

Hello,

I'm in the market for a few good production dvd players and I was just checking to see what others have used and what thay thought.

What I'm looking for:

Rack Mount.
No OSD (On Screen Display) or the option to turn it off.
XLR balanced audio connectors.
smpte Timecode style cueing and a jog wheel would be nice
Long or no timeout pause times.

These are the main things I'm looking for. However, something with a good image processor would also be nice. I'm looking for around 550 to 600 bucks idealy but whatever it takes to get what I need.

Please let me know what your using now and how well you like it. Also, what are the ups and downs.

Thanks

In the era of throw away technology with really short lifespans, I have switched to consumer products for DVD players.  I like the Pioneers the best as they have all of the audio decode schemes built in.  My install depatment is going down the Alcorn Mcbride route for things that need triggering and control.

That would also be fine however I really would like an infinite pause time and no OSD. Most pro branded players I've notice have osd hide. However it seems to be just luck when you find a dvd player with an infinite pause time. They don’t seem to consider this a feature.

This unit doesn't do everything you want...but I don't know a unit in that price range that does, but it will hide OSD.

We use them on video installations and have a few in the shop.

We also use several of the consumer models.

Have found that most of the panasonic models have an "OSD off" option.

Not sure about the length of pause time, haven't had one stop yet, but then again, we haven't tested it for length either.

We also discovered that if you get the DVD-S29 model, you can mount it to a rack shelf and it fits inside of 1RU!

Cheers

Haven't tried the Denon DVD, but have been very satisfied with the longevity/feature set of their pro CD players, this looks like a nice unit for $349. There's also a Tascam (they call this feature "Defeatable On-Screen Icons") 2RU player, the DVD-6500, which is also RS232 controllable.

I have also had pretty good luck with the "disposable" Panasonic cheapies.
