Video Cable Tester

What brand and model is your favorite video cable tester?  Do you have one type on your work bench and a second handheld unit for shows?

I use to use a "Dick Smith" network cable tester but i lost it and haven't replaced it with anything yet. This works awesome as long as you are handy with a soldering iron to get it working. Just get a few metres of cat 5 and some video(/sound in my case) plugs and hook the plugs up. you can put a couple o different types on each network plug.

The DSE tester has a transmitter and a reciever so you just make up 2 of each adaptor and put the cable between like normal. I have 3 adaptors (remember cat 5 has 8 conductors).

(Bear in mind with the list of my adaptors, as you will read below i think i used some scrounged cable instead of cat 5 as my adaptors all seem to be based around 6 conductors, not 8 )

Adaptor 1:
RCA (sockety plug things so you can connect plugs to it !DUH!)
BNC
Speakon (Socket with shrink wrap. 2 pins only)

Adptor 2:
XLR
Jack (sockety plug things - is there a real name for socket that you can get to go on the end of a cable???)

Adaptor 3:
S-video

Not an all in one device but certainly cheap. Have fun.

Uhh...CAT5 has 8 conductors arranged in 4 twisted pairs.

Apologies. perhaps i ended up using something different. i do rememebr scrounging and it was a while ago.

No matter the cable used or the actual configuration of the adaptors, the idea works and is still valid. it is also convenient since you can use it easily on installed cables.

Once again apologies.
