Lee, don't be too hard on yourself.

I'm sure Simon's reply was *intended* for the OP.
But infact he replied to your post.....(are you using flatview Simon?)

And I agree with those who think the statement, relayed by
the OP, is ehrrr.....wrong.

Hi Mats,

Sorry guys, I wasnt quite specific enough ...

My comment was in response to "I have a (actually very reputable) guy here in St. Louis telling me that the 01v96v2 has horrible preamps."

I'm not knocking MixWizards!

Oh, and Mats, as Bennett pointed out, I did in fact reply to the original post; I'm not quite sure how you think I didnt ...  Confused

Apologies for any confusion,

Simon

I've used one quite a bit and would not say that the preamps are anything special.  The whole package of the 01V96 is what it makes it so good.  Very flexible and powerful for a small size and low price, but nothing else stands out except for it's flexibilty, size and low price!

I recently purchased an 01V96K mixer, which replaced a MixWizard 16:2.  Yamaha reps will tell you the pre's in the 01V don't compete with the DM/M7CL/PMD consoles, although they are actually pretty good.  I recently used the console to drop live concert audio into a MOTU Traveler and DP4.6 software, and the audio was stellar--far better than I ever got out of my Wizard using direct outs in the analog world.  Sure, it wasn't as good as a DM1K/DM2K, but what the heck.  You have to look at the entire system to make judgement calls like that.  Can you really tell the difference between the pre's of each mixer through anything less pristine than studio monitors?  Probably not.

I honestly miss the EQ of the 'Wizard' for quick "down and dirty" sound checks, even though the digital EQ is much more flexible.  Add to that fact that the 'verbs are far better than the Wizard's, and that you get a decent compliment of dynamics processing, built-in output delays, and patching flexibilty ad nauseum, the 01V is honestly the better way to go.  If you MUST have better preamps, then just consider adding a card and a couple of MLA8's.  Then you'll have 32 channels at your disposal, 16 of which are pre's based on the DM2000!   Smile

How are you planning to connect those MLA8s to the 01v96? You could add an MY8-AD96 or an MY8-ADDA to get 1 of them in, but for the second one you will either have to include the mic pres you are trying to avoid in the first place, or unbalance the MLA8 and go in the insert return, thereby losing the inserts.

Thanks for the correction, Mac.  In search of my own solutions for adding an additional 16 channels to my 01V, I completely failed to recall why I personally wasn't going that way.  My attention has been focused primarily on AES solutions, since it will continue to support 96K/24bit resolution, AND offer an additional 16 channels using the MY-16AE.  It was actually the AD8HR mic pre that my Yamaha rep and I discussed for this use--NOT the MLA8!

The MY-16AE does not support 96k and 16 channels, one or the other.
