Altec Lansing Power Amps?
« on: April 30, 2006, 02:21:43 PM »

Anyone use these? I'm figuring they're all relatively old because there aren't really any new ones around, but ebay prices are good. I was looking at someone else's equipment the other day and saw a couple of these. The particular one he had appeared to be a dual mono amp that did 450w/ch at 8 ohms. Any opinions?

Anyone? Someone has to have seen these. They looked like they might be more install-oriented because the gain knobs were on the back of the chassis, so maybe in movie theaters? Still, there were several on ebay last I checked, so I know they're out there somewhere...

Do you have a model number? A description? Altec made a lot of amps over the years. It must be one of the last, as the older amps never got up to anything like 450W into 8 ohms.

There are several web pages dedicated to old Altec gear if you search for them. The amp may have been a 9646B which you can find information on here.

Thanks for the link to that site. Looking at the manuals, I believe they are model 9442A amps, rated at 400W/ch (450W max). Anyone use these? They seem like they would be good, but I'm just making sure.

Thanks,
Dan

For what it's worth, the 9442 is 100W per channel, the 9446 is 400W.

Instead of watts per channel, how about a quote in watts per pound?  (Or pounds per watt?)

I have several of the 9442, 9444, and 9446 amps.

They are heavy.
They are getting old and having problems. http://iratec.50megs.com/index.html specializes in working on Altec equipment

I am using 9444's for the HF on my main system, and will probably use the 9442's for the HF on monitors once I Bi-Amp them.

The nice thing about the 9444 and 9446 is that they have a back to front airflow and will ride in the racks nicely with the PLX amps I use for subs, midbass, and midrange.

I have 2 9446's that will run for a while, but get hot and shut down. I have a 9444 that one channel is dead on.
I have a 9442 that is intermittent on one channel.

I'll eventually get them repaired and use them in my home theater system.
