Scanners or Moving Head Fixtures for a Band
Nick Pignetti:
Personally, I'd prefer movers. Check out the Elation Platinum 5R. Awesome unit and has a hybrid spot/wash feature that can pull double duty for you.

brightness required will depend entirely on what else you have in the rig
as for heads vs scanners, you'll get more lights for your $ with scanners (for the most part), as something like a trackspot or technobeam will out perform any moving head you'll get in the $400-650/fixture range
once the budget goes up it shifts more into moving heads favor
scanner advantages/disadvantages:
cheaper (generally)
not as easy to floor mount (though it can be done...TSO used floor mounted cyberlight 2's on one tour)
generally heavy
mirrors can be easily broken without proper care
faster p/t due to less weight to move
moving head advantages/disadvantages:
not really useful until you get into the $1000/fix+ range
more versatile
higher resale value
more complicated
can only (for most moving heads...there's exceptions, rtm) be mounted two ways- ballast up or ballast down
