HI,
A little into:
I have been asked to run sound at my new church. I have some knowledge, actually just enough to be dangerous! I have read "study hall" posts on the old forum, this forum, links in the forum discussions, and other internet articles. I now know how much I do not know.

I have not started yet. Last week someone else was "mixing" and there was a boominess or "rain Barrel" empty sound to the worship leaders mic. She leads from the piano, infront of the main speakers, wearing a cheap (under 400 for 4 sets I think) headset mic.

I have sweepable mids on the channle EQ on the board, I think from my reading that I can cut a frequency in the lower range to help remove this? I use the sweep to find the frequency and then the other one to select the amount of the cut?
Any idea which frequency to look at?

An easy way to find out which frequency it is with no tools is to turn the master down some and then do a full boost on the sweepable mid and sweep through the frequencies till you find the one that makes it doubly bad and then cut it till it is reduced.


Since the vocalist sits in front of the speakers you will probably have limited success till you move the speakers out in front of the vocalist.

That would work during a practice, I guess during Sunday Morning I will cut and sweep to find the spot.

Because of the tight layout and location of the piano it will be a long time before the location of the leader/pianist is behind the speakers.
I know this is not an ideal situation. I just have to make the best of it. For now!!!

Hi Cliff! My "muso terms to engineer numbers converter"  says that "boominess" is usually within 1 octave of 200 hz and "rain barrel" or "hollowness" is usually within 1 octave of 600 Hz.  Happy ear training! Twist knobs, listen and learn!
