They are showing "Tom Dowd & the Language of Music", a documentary made in 2003.  Cool just for the vintage movies and stills from a lengthy career.

Best regards,

John

The Tom Dowd piece is good.

Check out BET Jazz.  I saw the "Nat King Cole" show yesterday - vintage black and white from the 50s.  I had no idea he could play a piano like that.  No excuses, none whatsoever.

They run some "smooth jazz" (of no interest to me whatsoever) occasionally, and some R&B that tries to pass for jazz, but in fact they also run the real thing.  I saw Coltrane and Monk together, and a concert from maybe the late 60s with Dizzy and Arturo Sandoval.  The Cuban blew Dizzy's doors off, it wasn't even close.    This isn't a criticism of Dizzy.  It's just that Sandoval was that good.  Near the end, when Sandoval really started to stretch out you could see the look on Dizzy's face.

They run some good stuff.  I have seen Charlie Parker, Miles, even Eric Dolphy not playing with Mingus.

there ya go.... :-)

Which reminded me, this is another documentary I caught a few months ago on some cable channel:

http://usa.festivalexpress.com/index2.html

More great vintage footage, and this time it's live sound!  Just a quick note, their website doesn't interact 100% with Mozilla on my PC-tried to play the movie trailer and it hung up a bit and wouldn't play.  One other page wouldn't work right either.

Best regards,

John

I've caught that one a couple of times lately on one of the 'Encore' channels or some such - not much of one to pay that close of attention to the channel.  Better still a friend dropped off 'Standing in the Shadows of Motown' last night......simply awesome!!

Grasshopper, you need to seek out the King Cole Trio recordings.

If you search the Blue Note site you will find a lot more Nat King Cole stuff.  You will also find a treasure-trove of jazz.

So much music, so little money (and time).
