I think I'd have a hard time selling our production manager on the reason why we need to buy a 60' x 40' chunk of mesh... let alone trying to rig it and store it every night.  Shocked

This is all very interesting!
I am just in pre production for an auto show where we are using a large LED display in the "round" and I will have RF mics and in-ears on deck.
There will be much testing!
Thanks for the heads-up.

This is a classic "raise the bridge/lower the water" problem. If you can't effectively mitigate the interference at the source, defend against it at the receiver. When all else fails, have hard wire available as a back up.

It would be interesting if any wireless MFRs are lurking and have insights.

Jon,
I can't offer advice about the LED's. But I'm curious. How is that RF scanner working for you? Do you find it useful? Take care.

The scanner has worked out great. I fire it up when we first get into the venue and scan the 500-600Mz range where the IEM and RF mics live and note what frequencies are transmitting data/radio/wireless muzac, etc. I also use Shure's new UHF-R Series RF mics and the Wireless Workbench software to scan and plot frequencys.

Icom also make a PC based version that has a scope in the software and you can download freeware called TalkPCR for it.

I heard about some issues with the Sir Paul tour of late.  They had a crap load of LED displays on the floor of the stage.  The problem was a basically a broadband RF noise floor problem.  [now that I read that back it sounds funny.  It really was a noise floor.]

Solutions included:
1)Minimizing wireless channels. Paul + guitars only (6ch or so) No "ears", wedges only.

2)Move wireless rx to stage and use low gain antennas.  The 1/2 wave whips pickup best from the side and not much from below (where the panels were).  Paddle antennas pointed straight up would work as well.

3)Use higher power transmitters to get up over the noise floor.

It also turned out, after further diagnosing the source of the problem, that the main culprit was the cabling running to the LED panels.  They were determined to be longer than they should have been.  Fixing this does not eliminate the problem however.  It only reduces it.

 ...just what I heard.
