From what I remember, most of Geddy's sound comes from a mic'd little G-K combo amp... not very arena rock to have sitting onstage .  Due to us Cannucks having an odd sense of humor most of the time, I would imagine the appliances (or vending machines) behind Geddy are to fill the space, and balance out the stage visually with Alex's HK stacks.  They're even miced........
