So back when the Crown PS2 was the “big” amp and dB sound out of Chicago ( or perhaps its was Showco) had hundreds of them I worked the IN as a stagehand at the Saginaw Civic Center.
Being a car factory town all they booked was heavy metal bands so they used lots and lots of PS2 amps. I can’t recall exactly how many PS2 amps fit in one full height rack. Either four or five anyway.
So the dimmer racks were off stage left on the ground (stage is about 5’ high). There is a guy minding his own business plugging in lighting mults and up above him they are rolling amp racks onto the sound wing. Well either the wing was not quite level or someone turned their head before the rack had stopped moving...and it just kept going.
Luckily the BA for the local was up in the stands doing paperwork and noticed the amp rack heading toward the edge of the stage. He yelled at the guy on the ground who did what every well trained stagehand should do. FIRST get your ass under cover and THEN curse the guy out for yanking your chain.
The rack went over the edge and literally right past the guys’ nose as he crouched under the stage. It broke all the mults off the dimmer rack top to bottom.
This happened over 20 years ago so I can’t remember exactly how, but they had light that night.
Just so you know not everyone is so lucky and kick guards on the edge of a stage are more then a nice idea, several years later an upstage truss rolled off the upstage edge with a friend of mine under it. It crushed his head and left him disabled for life.
Remember to take care of your ass out there.
Happy New Year to all.
