Punisher Sub
« on: September 01, 2005, 03:20:37 PM »

Hallo Everybody,

I am based in New Zealand and have been looking into building a couple of punisher horns.  Unfortunately I haven't been able to find Ciare distributors here. Would anybody have an idea as to where I might be able to find the woofers in New Zealand or where I can get them couriered cheaply.

Thanks!

hey.

I too live in NZ with its HUGELY limited driver selection,so I feel your pain. For me it was either an adire audio SHIVA, or a 2nd hand jbl2226. I got the 2226,and love it.

Im SURE I saw an australian distributor of CIARE,but the sites dont seen to appear in search engines easily. Email ciare, asking for a local distributor. Try yahoo.com.au,search within OZ.

I know you can get EMINENCE here from auckland, but if your buying a couple its probably still cheaper to import from partsexpress.com ! The lab12 is similar but Fs is quite different otherwise id use it on the punisher.

Bear in mind that there are alternatives.

Hey Mike,

Thank you for the info. I did do a search for Ciare in Australia but couldn't find anything useful though.  If you have any contact info in the future I'd appreciate it very much.

Yes Audio stuff is quite expensive down here, I envy the guys in the states sometimes Smile

One brand that I can get super cheap in New Zealand though is P Audio, there are some guys that ship them directly from the factory. I was wondering if somehing like the SD range of woofers might work in the punisher cab?

Thanks!

No doubt, there will be a woofer similar that will do mostly the same thing on the punisher horn-but whether it is as good response is the issue.
I could model up something on the punisher,or a similar horn.
The SD12 has about 1/3 - half the Xmax of the Ciare12

While the xmax on the punisher is high, the Xmech is only as high as typical PA drivers.
Which is good in a way, because then you can get the typical distortion at highest SPL,to warn you of destruction of drivers, while providing people with high distortion levels if they wish Razz

You could try and 'cheat' by using car audio 12"s for CHEEP from parallelimported.co.nz, could have some use.

Can I ask : How many punishers were you going to build?
Indoor usage?
What sort of music?
Fixed or portable?

P- Audio model SD15 seems promising , You could try the design for that at speakerplans

Howdy,

First off its CIARE! (Pronounced Chee-are-aye)
You wouldn't write Jbl, Bms, B&c, Eaw, etc.

I show that there is a distributor in Indonesia. Does that help?

If not I can ship them USPS surface from the US.

Contact me if I can help.

If walt or someone else  modifies  the The Punisher Cabs for 15" drivers , the driver problem for may be sorted out , as 15" woofers are more easily availible everywhere .

It wouldnt be a punisher then.
I have no problem with a larger horn, closer to 400litre eg WSX size.

The high power, high linear excursion driver is part of the tiny horn trick.

50hz is enough for most people anyway !

Some time ago i asked what if we scale down a horn to fit an 8'' driver.. the answer.. no way! the path and horn mouth are reduced increasing cutoff freq..
so logically, if we scale up the horn, the punisher, lets say.. we will go lower

In theory. But not all drivers will work on all horns, and you would need to find a driver that would model well in McBean's Hornresp.

About the punsiher loaded with P-audio SD-12 version.

I have made simulations using this driver instead of the Ciare, and it seems that it will work at least the same as the ciare one

I have ordered 4 pieces from the manufacturer as the sd-series are not imported here in Romania on a regular basis.

In a few weeks I will have the first prototype built and I will see  what it will perform like.

I have high espectations based on the simulations

Be advised that this could take a while because the speakers have to be delivered to me from thailand with the importer's next shipment

I'll keep you posted

below there is a simulation of the Ciare 12.00Sw Vs the P-audio SD-12
the grey line is the P-audio and the Black one is the ciare

http://www.stocare.as.ro/sd12.gif

simulation is made with one subwoofer in a corner (0.5 pi) with 1W of imput.

Which means you'll need to stack four to get a similarly flat response.

yes, the horn resp points to four pieces/side for flat response, but they were used by the original designer 2 per side with good succes.

Even in 1Pi, there is not such a big problem, the plot still stays reasonably flat.

if you look closely , it apears that the sd wil go flatter than the ciare speaker
