Creating portable backdrop for church application
« on: May 24, 2005, 02:28:17 pm »

Looking for some direction here - we are a church in a portable setup, looking for ideas on a simple but effective and versatile backdrop.  Our current idea is to hang 4-5 panels of white fabric (maybe scrim?) along the back of our stage, maybe 48" wide each, then light them  with some colors for nice aesthetics.  But we are very open to suggestions.  We'd also like to be able to make these ourselves if possible.

Any ideas out there?  We are novices at this, looking for some insight!  Are we on the right track?  Other suggestions?  Things to watch out for?

Thank you--

I'd look at getting something called "pipe and drape".  Basically, it's what the convention centers use to divide booths, an aluminum frame with drapes hung from it.  You don't want scrim, unless you want to look through it.

As far as color is concerned, I'd avoid white, as it will be brighter than the people in front of it.  If you want to be able to change color by lighting it, you should use a light grey.  Otherwise, choose a medium to dark color (perhaps a dark, but not navy blue) and stick with it.

You might also post in the church forum here and find out what other churches are doing.
