208-230V step up transformer
« on: December 29, 2004, 08:02:30 PM »

I know this may be slightly off topic for this forum, but this is close enough, and this is one of the few places I can count on knowledgeable people to speak up.

Our video guy has been asking me to look into getting step up transformers for our projectors. It seems that they are designed to run on 230V and are NOT switchable to run on any other voltage. He said he's rented projectors before that came with transformers to step up the voltage to 230V from 208, since in the U.S. at least, that is what they get run on 99% of the time. This is mainly to increase brightness from the lamps and just provide a cleaner output in general.

So now I'm looking for a suitable transformer for this purpose, or at least trying to get a price on them. What I need is a transformer that can step up two legs of A.C. from 208 V between them to 230V when measured from hot to hot. They need to be able to support 10 amps per leg.

Has anyone else out there had any experience with this, or know of such a product? Any links or info would be appreciated. Thanks!

It appears your projector is looking for single phase 120/240 and when you run it on 120/208 Y three phase it isn't delivering 230.  You could either require a single phase 120/240vac four wire service  (which is really more like 115vac and 230vac), or have someone build something for you or get different projectors.

Normally to convert single phase to work with three phase motors one would use a phase converter but I know of none that convert from three to single phase and a quick Google didn't turn up anything.  I've never seen any Variacs for that voltage either.

Since this isn't sound reinforcement related I'm moving it to the lighting forum and perhaps someone can help you there, though it will be linked here for a bit.  You could also check with Dave Bott over at AVS Forum but that's more of a high end home theater enthusist site.  You should probably call some electrical contractors and machinery people in your area.

EDIT:

Try these guys...

I know that such a beast exists, at least designed for permanent installation.  I don't know about portable use, though.  I'd try your local electrical contractor.

A simple solution is to use a Line Conditioner.  Tripplite (and others make these small units that would be perfect for what you need

A more industrial answer would be to use a Boost transformer

That Tripplite isn't the right unit.  He needs 2300 watts of 230 per leg (not accounting for PF or three phase in the equation) and those are only rated at 2000.  Plus, that unit is designed for three wire 230, basically Euro power and not four wire 120/240 or three phase Y.

The second link looks promising about what I had in mind as well.  I'll bookmark that one...

We haven't settled on anything yet, but I found another link, that looks promising, almost a complete solution to boot.
