how to properly connect stereo outputs to mono inputs
« on: December 25, 2004, 08:53:09 pm »

Hi,

I would like to know if using a Y connector is OK for feeding the stereo outputs from a CD player/cassette deck to a mono input such as is used on Bogen amplifiers? Is there any possibility of damage  to the CD/tape player from combining the outputs in this manor? The Bogen amp has two mono inputs both of which I need to run outputs from separate CD player and cassette deck. Will have a mono output going from the Bogen into a separate cassette deck for recording.

Many thanks,

Many do it, and it usually works, but it is not the correct way to do it.  Read this: http://www.rane.com/note109.html

Thanks Timmy,

The article from Rane seems to refer to crossover networks but I assume the same values will work with typical line level signals  from CD/Cassette Players.

Thanks again,

Anyone know where to buy an off-the-shelf summing network?  I haven’t had any luck with a Google search.

Hi Wayne,

I found an additional circuit which is extremely easy to make at the following link:
www.hut.fi/Misc/Electronics/circuits/linesum.html.

I have a situation where I am upgrading the sound system in a funeral home. I'm using a Bogen GS-60 amp with 12 drop-in ceiling speakers. There is a CD player and cassette deck that go with this system plus the ability to record from the Bogen back to the cassette deck. The Bogen provides for 2 mono aux inputs so I need to go from stereo outputs to mono with both units to work properly with the Bogen amp.

This circuit plus the one Timmy told me about should work.

Good Luck,
Garry

Correct

It first talks about summing a stereo output to a single sub woofer. This is just another place we use a Y cord (improperly)

http://www.rane.com/note109.html

You need to look lower.

Look under the subject-
Summing Boxes

And then the specific header-
Unbalanced Summing Box

Figure 1 shows the schematic.

It shows an example with 1/4" unbalanced connections, but RCA is the same since it has only 2-connections. I built mine out of all female RCA. It works great for summing stereo output when I listen to a single speaker for designing and testing xovers.

Thanks for that link Don. For some reason I haven't heard of those guys. Lots of useful stuff at decent prices.
