Hi,

I am trying to record from two microphones at the same time
on my computer. I have a Linux operating system. My sound
card has a mic input, line-in input and a headphone output.
I am trying to use the line-input for recording from the two
microphones at the same time. Do you know what type of cheap
circuitry I need to get it working? Do I need mic preamps?
Do you know the name of the two files that the two microphones
are writing in Linux?

How about a simply "Y" cable...?

yes, you need a set of mic pres, otherwise known as a small 2 or 4 channel mixer (behringer, mackie, ssl, depending on your quality needs).

pan one mic left, and the other mic right.  take an insert cable (ask at your local music store, and hope that the salesman isn't stupid...  but just in case he is, there is a t/r/s connector at one end, and then there are 2 separate cables comming out of that, both have a t/s connector).  get a little headphone adaptor that um...   'adapts' from big to small.  basically, the same setup that i use to plug my ipod into a mixing desk(if that helps out at all).   plug the 2 connectors into the left right outs of the mixer, and the other end (with adaptor) into your soundcard.

then, you need some recording software, such as cubase sx, un-cool edit pro, soundforge (i don't know what will work for linux) and use that software for the recording part of it.

you're a linux guy, and that means that you're smarter than i am, so you should be able to figure it out from there.

Hi again,

I don't want to mix the sounds from the two microphones. I want
to record them at the same time but save them on my computer as
two separate sounds.
Can the mixer preserve the two separate sounds instead of
mixing them?
Can the preamps just do the job without a mixer?

I think the line-in input has a dual channel while the
mic input has just a single channel. Am I correct?

What program are you using to record under linux?  

Although you will need a pair of mic preamps (a cheap Behringer mixer is acceptable for this purpose), it really isn't all that difficult to do what you want.  Once you get a line level signal into the computer, whatever program you decide to use will record both microphones into a single stereo file.  If you need the two signals separated into separate files, you will need to do this after you record.  The file name will depend on what program you are using to record, but usually you get to choose what it is.
