OT Suitable FrontPage Template?
« on: November 12, 2004, 12:18:17 AM »

Hi,

I have communicated with you guys on occasion over time and you have always been very kind and supportive and thoughtful.

I do a live high-tech solo-musician act and I was thinking of buying/locating a suitable FrontPage template and sticking my pix and related info in the proper spots and editing/updating to taste as time goes by.  Thoughts?

Before you open your wallet, think about a few things.

1.  How much content do you have?  Can you even fill 5 pages?  You're not Joe Satriani; very few people will be interested in your gear or endorsement deals.  Think of at least four specific content types (e.g. home/welcome/index, about me/us, photo gallery, downloads (mp3s or video or lyrics).  Then think about how you will populate that template with your information.

2.  Why use a template?  Living in a college town, I can find a number of talented student programmers/designers who would gladly do a site for $100.  Yes, your image is your best way to get a gig and build a fan base, but don't count out the "amateur" coder - often students have access to the same technologies and tricks as the pros - and more time to play with them.

3.  Don't spend money on a template that you can spend on better hosting.  Make your money go farther by working on the site piecemeal and having fast, reliable hosting for your uploads and your users' downloads.  Speed is key.  If an mp3 takes more than 15 seconds to start, I kill it and go on to something else.

I understand your desire to have a fully functional site without doing much work yourself; I think there are better ways to do it and maybe learn something in the process...
