How many Labs to replace my cabs.
« on: September 21, 2004, 01:21:43 AM »

I am the owner of 8 jbl designed single 18" W boxes
loaded with Evx 180b's . Powered by Qsc Rmx 4050's
briged on each pair rolled off at 24db at 40hz-48hz
Depending on confg.
My question is how many labs would I need to
reach the equivilent output.  Seeing that I have Never
pushed my W's to clip the amps and have been very pleased with there performance. I am truly looking for a
box that can stand alone. The W's short fall is that by
it's self it rolls off at 51Hz and sounds like shit / unloads.
If you use 2 per side or more best being 8 = a 40Hz
horn you have the thunder of gods.

Ah! The Don Keele design.

I would say 4 Lab horns. That design (W) has a 4 foot
long horn, where as the Labhorn I believe is 13 feet.

So, 4 labs should not only beat 8 of those W's, but
will go lower as well.

Thanks Elliot am interested in the output in
this box design. Though I am not to sure I need
the lower oct. Your thoughts on 20-40hz .
I have never run a Pa system with any kind of output
at these fq and have realy thought of them as kind
of useless in all but organs or synths.

For the record, I'm a sub low bass fanatic. However,
I know that these frequencies are not always necessary.

It really depends on your application.

Again, it depends on the type of events you are
doing. Seeing that the Lab Sub uses are long horn,
the lower bass notes will sound stronger than the
higher bass notes. This is due to lower bass waves
are larger than higher bass waves. If the horn can
produce those lower notes, naturally, the lower
frequencies will sound stronger than the higher
frequencies.

This is of course, if you have frequencies in the
lower octaves to begin with.

The Lab Sub offers extended bass. Those W's offer
impact punchy bass. Its a matter of preference,
and, application requirements.

I just found an old Live sound mag..article by Barry Bozeman that started me on redfining my view of mixing and sub bass impact. I find every mix I hear is unbalanced for my tastes. With real sub bass energy you realize how easy the rest of the system can work and still sound powerful and satisfying.BUT...you will never know it until you have the cabability....a concept apparently lost on many. I use an ELF sub setup in the studio and the effect of subbass is something that you might not identify at first listen but it is VERY apparent when it is taken away. I personally believe that this approach is the future of live audio...or at least it should be. Save your hearing and make it sound great...what a concept!!

I remember when he started to post his ideas on the Old
Board years ago. It wasn't a pretty site. Tom Danley had his share of abuse as well.

I agree 100%

One of the main criterias when designing my rig, was to
try to make it as "Hi Fi" as possible. Its a very expensive
task, but, results are very rewarding, to say the least.

With the variety of music needed for reinforcement these
days, one can't follow the rule, "Well if its good enough
for Rock, its enough for Jazz." Patrons are getting more
educated wth their Home Theatre Systems, and, expect the
same quality at a concert.
