Well, I went to the local DJ store (DJ Supply) to check on the price of rentals for subs, and they want $100 per cab for Cerwin Vega folded horns (don't know which), and $100 for an amp to power them.

Is it just me, or is this price rediculous?  What's a fair price to pay for subs and an amp?

Which brings me to my next point, does anyone know anywhere in the Detroit area that rents subs/amps?  Anyone want to rent theirs out?

The price is ridiculous. I don't remember exactly, but somewhere around 5%-10% of actual cost is how much the rentals should be. Depends on the dealer I guess, and how long your renting them for. I know a crown ce-4000 from Mars Music used to be $56 a day.

Well, I'm a DJ and I need more subs for a dance of 1500 people.  I have Eliminator subs, which I hate, and I won't have my LABS done by then.

If you have a crossover/DSP...if you run a center cluster with your EV's you may be able to get a little more out of them. Also if you are crossing them over above 120hz try lowering them and cutting frequencies below 40hz as those speakers are pretty usless below 40hz. You may be able to push them a little harder by tweaking things a bit and reconfiguring. This may get you through till you get your labs done

Huh, I totally forgot about the 30 day thing.  Will they give me crap if I return them a week after I bought them?  Actually, it doesn't matter, it's their policy.  Do I get all I spent back?  I thought you didn't get tax back or something, but I may be wrong.

And JR Rager, I run a Driverack PA in my system.  I cross the subs over at about 100 hz (I think) and I do cluster them in the center.  The problem is when I turn the amp up too much, they slap...I don't know if that's the right term, but I hope you know what I mean.  They're actually in right now being checked out, one has an overextended cone from when we lent them out I think, and they're going to check the other too, because they both seem kind of touchy if you know what I mean.  If I turn the PLX 2402 up beyond about 60-70%, they sound like hell.

OK, you cross them at 100hz - how about the HPF?  If you aren't running a high pass filter (probably around 40Hz as JR mentioned) over-excursion is highly likely and the most common symptom of over-excursion is cone slap and/or the voice coil bottoming in the gap.  Remember also that setting the 'volume' controls on your power amp only adjusts the required amount of input to produce rated output - it doesn't limit the output of the amp.

With a 2402 you should be able to run them pretty good. Are you running them mono @ 4ohms off the 2402 or are you running them stereo one cab per channel. If you are running them stereo you are definiatly underpowered. If you are running them mono you should be close to where you want to be. ((400x2)x2)=1600watts @ 4 ohms vs the 2402's 2400watts @4ohms (if memory serves me correct). I would even suggest trying to run your HPF up to 45hz to give you a little more headroom. You can test and see if it still sounds suitable for your application. Also, if you havent already, set your gain structure and limiters to prevent from over powering the speakers. I realize you truly need more sub cabinets, but if you can't afford the rental, then maybe you can get a little more out of what you have by optimizing the system. I used to do the HS dances a few years back, and usually they only paid in the $350 range, so I understand it would be tough to justify renting additional gear.

Actually, we use the 2400 for the tops now and a Mackie 1400i bridged for the subs.  

What do you think is the best configuration for the system?

Speakers - 4 Eliminator tops (2 of them are the i version)
Subs - 2 Eliminators
Amps - PLX 2402, Mackie 1400i, Crown XLS 602

We don't use the Crown in the current configuration, just the QSC at 4 ohms per side for the tops (2 per side) and the Mackie bridged for the subs.

I'll be sure to set a 45 hz filter when we get the subs back from reconing.  I bet it was us messing with the subharmonics synth on the driverack that messed up the cone.  Oops!

Your configuration should be fine. More than likely you will find that the system will probably be punchier and perceived loudness will be greatly improved with some more head room. It should also sound tighter and more acoustical, as now you won't be muddying up the bass with all the bonus distortion from the driver freaking out from the "sub Harmonic" frequencies...lol.
