Hi

I work a TV news organisation and among other things we have to send news across to a mobile phone company so their subscribers can listen to the news on their cell phones. We currently use Sound Forge to record Voice Links, then take these links into Adobe Premiere edit them there and then use a software converter called Alive to convert these edited files that are in .wav format to Dialogic ADPCM .vox format as the mobile company wants us to ftp these files across to them only in .vox format with 8Khz, 4 bit mono.

The problem is that the audio after converson sounds terrible specially when heard on a mobile phone! Is there any cleaner more elegant way of accomplishing the same

Try limiting the bandwidth before encoding. HPF at 300 and LPF at 4kHz (or bandpass at both) will remove unnecessary freqs so the data compressor won't have to deal with them. A little pre-emphasis in the 2kHz octave range (3dB or so of boost) might help articulation. Use a gate to get rid of the ambient noise floor. Just before you save, normalize using RMS to even out the levels and bring them up to maximum. I would do this in SF before editing. You can write a batch to process the files automatically.

Also, be sure you have the right output settings in Premiere so it isn't converting or (data) compressing anything. They should be set to the same settings as Sound Forge. (Wave files at mono, 16-bit, 44.1kHz?) The audio software converters in Premiere are notoriously bad.
