Bassmax B 1, Servodrive Basstech 7, or EV MTL4
« on: July 02, 2004, 09:32:51 AM »

hello, i'm using some dual 18 bass reflex cabinets and i'm just not satisfied. i want to get some horn loaded subs (single or dual 18). i want to get the best i can buy, what i mean is i want to make a smart, good decision with no regrets. i've read about the bassmax b-one and the servodrive basstech 7, from the sites and the forum here. i've never heard either one but would like to. one cab i have heard before is the ev mtl4. it blew me away (it does have four 18's in it though). i never see very many posts about that sub. the sound company that had these (that i heard) picked them up from the metallica tour several years ago. i can get a pair for a reasonable price and i have the power to run them... am i cutting myself short? i've read over and over the b-one and basstech are the best. what do you think? any words on the ev mtl4 compared to the others? thanks!

It might be helpful to try to find the results of the first Sub ShootOut back in January of 2003.  Our host, Joe, had several sorta custom modified versions of the MTL4 in his personal arsenal.  In a one on one comparison, from the high 40s on up, the MTL, the BassMAxx and the LabSub were fairly evenly matched.  Below the high 40s though the MTL exhibited the long held EV belief that "there ain't nothin' down there!". (There certainly ain't nothin' down there that comes out of an EV cab!!!)   Distortion tests also showed the same much higher level of distortion from the EV as from other non-horn loaded cabs when compared to properly designed horns.   If you don't have the tools or talents to build the Labs yourself, might I recommend the SPL B-DEAP 32, a very close cousin designed as a sontinuing evolution of the LAb.

The most recent Shootout was in August 2003

Although you won't find the MT4, or Lab Horn listed, the
BDeap 32, and, two models of the Bassmaxx were in attendance.

There were a lot of comments, so prepare yourself for some major reading.
