Low cost computer DMX output?
« on: June 07, 2004, 04:35:00 PM »

Hi,  Does anyone know of any low cost DMX512 output devices for a computer (and associated software), preferably USB

I'm not looking to control to many channel at the moment.  Sowcad Artist lite (150 DMX channels) look's fairly good for 350Ukpounds.  Has anyone got any experience using Showcad Artist? Is there anything cheaper out there (controller or PC based)?

Cheers

Hog PC, I'm told, is about $4 - $5K.  But DON'T QUOTE ME AS I REALLY HAVEN'T SHOPPED AND THESE PRICES COULD BE WAY HIGH OR LOW.

LightJockey (Martin) USB can be had for around $1,200 (roughly).  I paid $1099 plus tax.  There is also a pcmcia version that goes for about $1900 +/-.

Elation's Compuware I think is about $700.

I think that there's also something called Sunlite or Axis, but I'm not sure how much.  I also heard that Elation bought them out, but again, just a rumor.

There was also a post at the Delphi Lightnetwork about somebody offering some new product they developed for about $100.  I can't remember whether it was usb or parallel port based.  You may also see that one on ebay.

All the above will run 512 channels.  Using multiple dongles, LJ, the Elation, and the Hog can run up to 2048.

Check ebay, but you'll be very lucky to find one.  They seldom break, seldom go out of style, and no one ever sells them.

There's also a place called used intelligent lighting .com (or something like that) that had a Martin pcmcia card for $1800, which is high for used, but whatever.

There's probably more options but this is all I'm aware of.

There was a Hog PC with a playback wing and a programming wing for about $1500, but has been sold. I would check there once in a while... prices seem to be good, and most of the stuff a waranty of some sort.

The Axis program is from NSI.  I've seen it listed for $600

Added: The 512 version was available at Farralane for $499

The NSI Axis comes in two flavors, Lite and Full.  Lite only gives you 72 DMX channels.  The Full gives you 512 channels and you can link up more units to create more DMX Universes each with 512 channels.

LIte goes for around $600 and Full weighs in at around $1200.

I think I got that right. Smile

Peace,

James
