midhorn help
« on: May 02, 2004, 02:25:34 PM »

Hi,

I am beginning to build a new pair of LAB's and now the problem of the top's is bigger then ever.

What is the next best horn design after the TD1 ?
Or maby you can help me find a design for a good midbass horn and another one for the high's. I would be happy with a 3 way horn system without any passive crossovers.
Also some good horn designs for Eminence drivers would be also very interesting.

Best regards,
Bogdan Confused

Check out the Yorkville U15 and U215.  These use a Unity horn design licensed from Sound Physics.  These cabinets have very controlled horizontal dispersion and array well (good when you need two or three cabs per side).

I think perhaps the U-15 may fall a bit short of what's needed to top off a LAB horn..especially if run in passive mode. The 215 biamped might be better.

Hi Bogdan!

This is a link to a German DIY forum with plenty of links.

Disclaimer: I have no idea how useable the content of the linked pages is, but there are so many links that you might be lucky.

Thank you,

i know the German PA-forum, pretty good. I check in there from time to time.
I also was curious if any of you tried some particular design and had good or bad experiences with it.

As for buying ready made boxes is out of the question, specially from the USA...just sending them would be over the budget.

Thanx,
Bogdan Smile

anyone know something about it ? Is it made after a martin horn, what is it called, frquency response, how does it sound, what drivers can be used in it ?

Thank you,

Try this:
one Magnum 12HO in a horn
Throat area 31.5in^2
Mouth area 441in^2, so 21"x21" internal, with 3/4" material for the horn walls, externally 22.5"x22.5"
Length of 40"
At 20", the area is 143in^2
Make the horn in two sections, with flat walls in each, sort of like the big horn here:
http://ldsg.snippets.org/HORNS/images/4way/stack.jpg
but with only two sections instead of 3.
Bolt the woofer on to the throat of the horn, so no additional front chamber volume.
However, you might want to route a circular groove in front of the surround to accomodate the cone's travel.
For the rear chamber, make a 0.5ft^3 sealed box.  This accounts for the volume occupied by the woofer.

Use four of these horns next to each other, one on top of each Lab horn.  You should get down to 80hz -3dB, up to about 400hz.  Max output should be about 137dB/1m with ~600 watts to each speaker.  I would definitely recommend highpassing at 80hz.  Used in lower numbers, they will not have as flat a response and will not go quite as low, but would still be marginally usable.

As a disclaimer, I have not built and tested this - it's just a suggestion.

Hi John,

Thank you, i am familiar with your site and projects.
About the Magnums...i have to mention that it is also a problem with the budget. I hope to find something so miraculous as the LAB Very Happy ...didn't find yet.

How do you abtain a line array sistem, what makes it so good ?

Thanx,
