Mackie's 1200 watt top box mixer - the 808
« on: April 25, 2004, 02:26:56 PM »

Still gets me every time I read it.

"1200 watts from an 8 channel top box mixer"

2 ohms  600W x 600W per channel

4 ohms  450W x 450W per channel

8 ohms  300W x 300W per channel

So to get a true(ish) stereo 1200 watts from this box, you need 4 cabs @ 8 ohms each.  And they will only see 600 a side/~300 a box.

Looks like the only way to have the most power per box is to run it stereo with a 4 ohm cainet on each side. That way you will at least see 450 watts per cabinet.

If you are running mains off one side, and monitors off the other, then you will see even less power becuase you tap out the amp at 600 watts.  SO in order to get 600 watts, you need four 8 ohm cabs, which will only be getting 150 watts each. (or a pair of 4 ohm cabs that will of course see 300 watts each)

For what has turned out to be a very successful product for Mackie, and a handy all in one mixer for small acts to carry, I sure wish they had been able to put a larger amp in there.

not really,
I think the market that Mackie is after with that product, does not care that they have a speaker that requires X amt of watts.
They simply have picked up a swiss army knife top box that has the same jacks as the speakers they own.

I was simply looking at their product lit and thinking outloud here on the LAB lounge.

While I can't address specifics of the Mackie box I do know a little about the target market from several years doing design and product management for that category.

You comment about speakers and watts is if anything an understatement... While I'm not sure that they are alone in thinking watts are more important than SPL  Smile , topbox mixer user's have been known to confuse a slower gain taper with less power... I shepherded a few generational evolutions of the XR600 and you don't mess with the goose laying all those golden eggs.

When you only give them one knob, that knob damn well better do what they expect it to.

Are my maths wrong, or is it even worse than that?
4 boxes a side - that's only 150W per box!

...isn't it?

Yes, 4x 8 Ohm speakers on each amp channel would only get 150W per box. 4x 4 Ohm (2 per channel) cabinets would get 300W per box. This is a fair amount of power for the typical applications these go into but don't expect to break windows with 1,200W of fully loaded power. While 4 Ohm cabs are not as common as 8 ohm, when buying such systems if available they may be an inexpensive way to get more SPL assuming the speakers have similar efficiency.
