What do you get for your extra $100 bucks on the 166?  I assume the sound quality is better but how good of a system would you have to have to notice it?  This would be my first use of a compressor and I'm not even sure how I'm going to use it. (Just on vocal channels, whole mix, future unknown applications)  Is it worth the difference or would the cheaper model work fine for me to play with for now.

The 166XL has Peak Stop limiters, which may or may not be useful to you. The main issue IMO, is that the auto attack release on the 266 is poor. You're better off using the 266 in manual for the attack/release. The 166 is a noticable improvement.

Be aware that the 166XL's Peak Stop function clips the signal, so things can get a bit ratty sounding if you hit it very much.

The 166XL has a better gate.

For general use (vocals, guitars, etc.) I'd save the $ and go for the 266XL.

Or, if you can come up with $600, you can get a used Presonus ACP88: 8 channels of decent comps and passable gates.
