It's an inconsistent sort of thing in that I can't replicate it most of the time.  People are looking at it, if we can't replicate it consistently, it's kind of hard to fix.  There are other ways to follow threads such as subscription, syndications (for Newsgator users) and emailed responses.

One more thing not specifically to Tom, but to some of the others that are having a difficult time enjoying the new format...

Sometimes things will happen and software has a way of doing things at times that is difficult to get a handle on, even for the people that built it.  We strive to make this as easy and flexible as possible, there will be issues that develop from time to time.  While I don't mind and even encourage is criticism or comments on how we or the infrastucture is doing there is one thing that is getting long in the tooth.

Some, a few though not many have resulted to "if this doesn't change I'm gone", "you didn't do this like I wanted, I'm out of here".  I have one thing to say to those folks.

Here's problem that I've noticed - when I'm working in the "unread posts" view (very handy!) it sometimes has the same posts that I've already read in the view.  It's like it hasn't registered that I've read that post.  Sometimes it will show the same message or series of messages from a thread several times before it's marked as "read"

First off I think I misspoke or misunderstood what you ment.  I was refering to the above quote of "it appears that's the way it is intended to work"

the read/unread markings are kind of working now.  It is about 90% corect in its markins.  But it is makring threads and mesages I have not looked at yet as read.  I am curious how the information is stored on my computer.  I am asuming the old way was based on the history stored in my browser.  It looks like the new program uses a cookie or is based on my system clock/ login.

I will also try to look for a repetable patern for you.

I've determined that nothing that you read in the "unread posts" view is ever marked as read - you have to either click "mark all posts as read" or go into the thread manually so the forum thinks you've read it.

I've noticed the software doing the extra marking as read as well.

I think I've found the pattern: First an example thread, each line is a message, numbered for convience, dashes show the equivalent of tree view

If messages 9 and 10 are read then messages 2,3,8,9 & 10 will be marked as read.
If messages 12 and 13 are read every thing but 7 will be marked
If messages 8 and 9 are read then 2,3,8 and 7 will be marked as read.

It seems if you read at least two messages "further into the thread" it marks as read everything above them as shown in the tree view.

I'm not 100% sure that this is exactly correct but it seems to mostly work to predict the forums erratic (and very annoying) behavior.

We've got some info to work with.  It'll be a bit before we really dive into it.  The functionality depends on the specific veiwing prefs in the profile, particularly the tree view.  The flat view seems to be honky dory but tree needs some work.  We'll address it but in the near term but for right now the priority is getting the RecPit moved.

If ya'll find anything new let us know.  I'll check back once a day or so.

I think you're going in the right direction, Philip.  Well done.  I would agree that it's annoying, though I wouldn't say it was erratic, from looking at the code it looks like it's supposed to do that.  Weather that's an error or not, I can't say but it looks like it's doing what it's being told to do.

Most of the users and development happen in flat mode, like most other forum systems. The threading was one of the main reasons for choosing FUD.  It looks like there hasn't been as much testing in threaded and somethings, (like this for example) might have been coded with flat in mind.  It's also possible that just a bit of the logic is misordered and an oversight.  If you think about it, in tree mode

If 4 is a direct reply to 3, then one could possibly ASSume that someone had read all posts.  Hmmmm, but....

If we're in flat mode, we really have no choice as the posts appear on the forum.  I suppose you could just skim over them or not look at them but flat the program wouldn't really know if you read them, only if they have been drawn to the screen during your session (which is what looks like is happening)

Hi Dave,
Somthing good I discovered today was that when I loged into another computer it knew what was marked read/unread.  Very cool.  This tells me that the read/unread is stored on yours servers instead of of on my computer.
