What does a coupler clamp do?
« on: January 31, 2011, 12:42:12 AM »

This may be a stupid question, but what is the purpose of a coupler clamp?

To connect 2 pieces of pipe or truss together. There are also swivel versions. They are often used to extend pipe out from a truss, or to make pipe grids.

You can use them to build "trees" at the top of pipe and base. I've done everything from tiny pinspots to a pair of movers or a handful of lekos and dimmer packs.

Oh, you mean a "cheeseborough" or "cheese burger".  :)

That's what I've always heard them called.  Maybe it's a TV thing.

I've always heard them called "Scaff Clamps".  Seems like there's many different names for the same thing.

Scaffolding Clamps have been called "Cheeseborough Clamps" or "CheeseBurgers" for as long as I can remember.

I always refer to the cast Scaffolding type as Cheeseburgers, but I call the machined nice looking ones "Swivel Couplers" or "90 deg Clamps" as the case may be.

Here are some pics of both types in the swivel style. Both types also come in 90 deg fixed, as well as HALF Couplers that allow you to mount 1/2 of the clamp on an item (like a lighting fixture yoke) and hang it from a pipe.

I'm so old, when I was doing FOH for Tommy Dorsey, to balance out the horn section I would slide their chairs downstage and upstage to mix!
