Using Effect Insert as Direct Out
Jared Stewart:
I know that you can use an effect insert on a mixer as a direct out by using the "half click" method, but is there a way of using a TS or TRS cable along with a mono/stereo adapter to allow you to plug the cable in fully? If so I assume you use a TS patch cable...but is it used with a female mono->male stereo or a female stereo->male mono adapter?
Thanks for the help.

Yes. Build a cable that is TRS on the console end and TS on the end that will be the direct out. On the TRS end short tip and ring and wire that to the tip of the TS, Shield goes to shield. The shorted tip and ring will make the connection that you are breaking by fully inserting the plug.

If you are not up to buidling the cable with the loop built in, you can do the same thing with a y cable with 1/2 the y looped back to the return of the insert.

+1 to Macs plan.

Chris Hindle:
I have been using "Mac's Method" for 25 years or so.
Example 1 - taking a feed for Snare FX, without taking up a bus on the board.
Example 2 - Band was trying to figure why the harmonies weren't. Using an 8 track recorder, we used "Mac Cables" to grab the 4 vocals, vocal group, and main out. Took all of 30 seconds to see where the problems were.
