For an investigation to be thorough, it takes time.  It's not unusual for the NTSB to spend more than a year investigating a plane crash.  Hopefully the investigation into the stage collapse will be quicker than that.  Still, it's more important to be accurate than fast.  And any speculation in the mean time is more dangerous than beneficial.

I drove by the fairgrounds today on my way to a gig downtown and the structure is still on site and appears to be in the position in which it fell.
That is all I can ascertain so I won't speculate as to what is happening there.

The follow up: Senate Bill 273 Indiana pdf.

You might also wish to look at the PLASA/ESTA published standards page.

Note:ESTA and PLASA merged last year, and the organisation is now called PLASA. The American section is still American, and the ANSI standard is entirely driven by Americans.

New law being reviewed in Indiana on outdoor stages.

Passed the senate there and new law will be requiring engineers to sign off, like the building inspections.

This will require more time for the approval process for running shows.

What will this do for the small local people having shows outside venues behind the local bar.  Updating their pole shed covers and getting the bands small lighting truss approved.

If our 7 to 1 weight approval on rigging is not good enough than the 10 to 1 used in Europe also saw a catastrophic failure last year also.  Should an engineer be planning for 20 to 1?
