2011 LAB EXPO / SMAART 2-day May 16-19 in MA
« on: January 24, 2011, 10:50:47 PM »

Great news! We're confirmed to be back at the Wachusett Village Inn in Westminster, MA.

I'll be taking point in pulling together a 2-day expo on May 16 and 17, followed by a special 2-day SMAART class with Karen and Jamie Anderson.

If you've been to our gathering before, I'm sure you'll be back. If you've not joined us yet, this is the time to make the trek.

The free expo event offers an incredible opportunity to network with learn from industry leaders and other providers and technicians from all over the world.

The Inn offers great food and comfortable rooms at fantastic rates. I'll have more soon on the rooms rates.

I'm sure Karen or Jamie from Rational Acoustics will pipe in shortly with details on their SMAART offering for May 18 and 19.

I'd love to get feedback on what / who you'd like to see exhibiting at this year's expo. Please also reply to the thread if you'll be attending or if you have any questions.

Hope to see you in May!

Thanks David, your hard work , ( as well as Bennett's ) is much appreciated!

How about a comparison of digital vs analog. LS9 vs APB Pro Rack.

How about inviting the locals to a concert so we can mix for real?

Thanks,     Don

Don,

How would we compare them?

There is a live band the evening of the first night, and the mixing position is open to all.

Hi Bennett, providing you can get a Mix Switch ( APB? )  a splitter and an LS9 , split the band inputs to the two mixers, send to the Mix Switch, switch and compare!

Thanks,    Don

Asbury Audio has provided the PA and mixing consoles/ surfaces for this event each year, and we will be doing the same this year. The truck heading to the event this year will be coming directly off of a show run, so the main drive will include a mix switch and a DLP 412. I have an APB prorack house and an extra split that I can send, the rack it lives in has 4 channels of DS201, 2 channels of 160a, 4 channels of DL241, a D2, and an M2000. If anyone has an LS9 to bring I'm game, though I would rather see the side by side race/ quality comparison happen outside in the afternoon rather than in the more relaxed evening portion of the show.

We would need a band as well, my preference there would lean more towards the everyday rock and roll type rather than the jazz ensemble that we have utilized in the evening, as IMNSHO the market for either of these console products probably leans more towards the combat audio bar/ club/ local band scene.

Hey everyone, it's been a busy week nailing down attendees and talks, here's what I've got so far.

Exhibitors:
APB Dynasonics
Midas
Shure
Philips Color Kinetics
Fulcrum Acoustics
Sennheiser
Allen & Heath
Soundcraft
JTR Speakers
Avid
Lectrosonics

Presenters:
Dave Gunness (? Something Interesting)
Ken Bruns (State of the Art Lighting)
Howard Kaufman (Multi-Channel Digital Radio)
Dave Missall (Digital Microphones)
Graham Wakefield (Inventory Management)

There will be more coming, MusikMesse is this coming week so most people are out of the office. I've got my fingers crossed for a few surprises when they get back and we can finish working out details. If half of what I've been working on comes through this is going to be the best event so far.

As every year, the Tyra Penn band will be playing the evening of the 16th, great players with good music. There is a bar in the room, and good local beer on tap. This is a great chance to play with mixing consoles, talk shop, and network. I promise not to start day 2 until 10:00 a.m. so you can get breakfast and some fluids into your body.

Please, sign up for the Smaart class! There is a $50 discount for attending the expo, the training is second to none, and they took a risk and put their names down for us early. I'm going to be there, it would be great to see familiar faces all four days. The new stuff that Smaart 7 can do is fantastic, and Jamie will show you the advantages of multi-mic measurement.

More info is available over here.

Stay tuned for another few big announcements about this Expo, this year is going to be by far the best so far, and will set the tone for expos to come.

In case you've forgotten what it was like last year: http://srforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/mv/msg/57067/0/96/0/

And here's an updated list of exhibitors for this year:

Quote
Exhibitors:
APB Dynasonics
Midas
Shure
Fulcrum Acoustics
Sennheiser
Allen & Heath (?)
Soundcraft
JTR Speakers
Lectrosonics
DiGiCo
Lab.Gruppen
EAW

Presenters:
Dave Gunness (Sensitivity, max output, and the effects of EQ)
Matthew Haber (Lighting for Sound People)
Howard Kaufman (Multi-Channel Digital Radio)
Dave Missall (Digital Microphones)
Graham Wakefield (Inventory Management)
Tom Young, Bennett Prescott (Fill Philosophy)
Josh Evans (Digital Audio Networking)
Jamie Anderson (TBA)

Console Training:
Tom Der (Soundcraft)
DiGiCo?

I'm just waiting on A&H to confirm and then I'll be able to put together the final schedule. Plan on 10-6 Monday and Tuesday. Rooms are cheap and plentiful, this event is like Beef Bouillon... concentrated, and delicious!

If you haven't signed up for Smaart training, this is the time to do it! $50 off for Expo attendees. Here's what Karen has to say about it.

My hotel room is confirmed. I won't be able to get there till Tue afternoon as I have a gig Tue morning in lower Manhattan.

I'm staying for the Smaart training, I've been using it since the JBL days, it's about time I took the training.

See ya around 2pm.

Andy Leviss just handed me a prototype of the Duck's Echo USB Audio Interface. It has substantial transformers, and soon will also have a mono switch, ground lift (currently ground is lifted), and a SPDIF out. I will have it with me tomorrow and for the Smaart training.
