I was recently asked to provide sound for a high school dance. The DJ has plans to set up staging (8'x8'?) in the center of a large gymnasium and put his setup on that.

I already told him that although it would be "super cool", it would be difficult to get good sound with that setup.

I don't know the dimensions of the room but figure a regular high school basketball court with room for bleachers on both sides.

Incase we actually end up doing it that way, how would you guys deploy the system?

I have in my inventory two QRX212s and four double 18"s.

I considered laying the subs horizontal on each side of the stage and then renting two more QRX212s and flying all four center clustered over the DJ but i have no idea how well this will work.

The ceiling of the room has plenty of I-beams etc. to fly from. I think he is planning on flying truss anyway. (Assuming all rigging will be done by a licensed rigger.)

Any ideas will be appreciated.

No matter what you do in that configuration, the performance area is going to be totally pummeled with bottom end, unless you could work out some sort of steering arrangement (not likely for a high school dance).

I think getting the subs as close to each other as possible (under the riser perhaps?) will be key to minimizing serious LF lobing.

No problem, it is a dj in a gym, not that big a deal, most for fun!!

Put a sub and a top in each corner, and have fun!

You get some uneven sub and coverage, but i expect people are there to dance and party.

Do you necessarily want the same sound everywhere?  Might creating some areas with less coverage actually be desirable?

Why not allow him to stay in the center where he wants to be, but still place the speakers at one end or opposing ends in the corners.. Either way you in a gym and its not going to sound that great.

Its a dance the kids are happy long as there is BASS and LOUD music.
