I actually think that this Karma /applaud/smite thing could be very a controversial topic.
At least it has been in a couple of other forums that I am a member in. It also lead to quite a bit of misuse.
And to be honest: I had to look up the translation for "smite" as I have not heard or used that word in my not so infrequent use of English in my life...

I don't really like the idea of making value judgments about members or posts in the "karma" field.  Replies can have constructive criticism which might serve better.
