Sound for Church Nursery
« on: August 09, 2011, 05:03:50 PM »

Have any of you guys tried using a FM transmitter for sound in the nursery?

I've been looking at the Fail-Safe Long Range Transmitter but a bit worried about FCC violation.

The nursery is about 300 ft from the sound the board. Any thoughts?

thanks

I'll let others comment on FM transmitters for audio, but one thing you should consider is if your nursery uses a paging system (to notify parents of unruly children) or might in the future.  Paging systems transmit at relatively high power (like 2 Watts).  If the paging transmitter is located in or near the nursery, it will likely interfere with any receiver in the nursery, no matter that they are on different frequencies.  You can make it work, but you might need to move some antennas or equipment.

The manufacturer's data, http://www.elecsky.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=41, states it is a Part 15 device, which means that unlicensed operation is allowed.  However, the claimed 300m transmission distance is much greater than would normally be expected for a Part 15 device.  To me that means that either that range is achieved with settings that would violate the Part 15 status or that range is very optimistic and the practical range would likely be much less, a typical 'consumer' Part 15 transmitter would generally have closer to a 200' practical range if the transmitter and/or receiver are indoors.  300' from a legal Part 15 transmitter indoors to a receiver indoors, and assuming it would probably have to transmit through several walls, may be pushing it.  And modifying the antenna or transmitter to boost the level would probably violate the Part 15 requirements.

I just installed such a system which uses receiver/power amps at the receiving ends (kitchen, parlor and nursery) to pick up the assisted listening system signal from the sanctuary. I had to remote the antenna (to get it out from behind a brick wall) and bump up from the standard to a higher-gain antenna. But it works quite well.

I suggest you contact Listen Technologies who can guide you through what you need.

This church has a paging system for the nursery and in the two Sundays where this new system has been used there have been no complaints about interference.
