It makes a great snare mic. Its a little beefier and it has a little more crack right off the bat compared to a 57.

+1. Have four of them that I use all of the time on a number of instruments. Does an excellent job on snare drums.

Much more durable than the plastic head on the 57!

Hey Friends,

I was wondering how may of you use the Audix I5 for snare and are you happy with it.

I usually use a Shure 57 or an Audix D1 but I want to try something elso out on snare without breaking the bank and also something that can take a hit and not break into a million pieces.

I used a 57 for a long time, tried the D1 for a little, it was fine. I went back to the 57 mainly because of the clip on the D1. I decided to buy a couple i5s about 2 months ago, I like it better. Its my snare mic of choice between the 3. It's a little shorter than the 57 and better when using "the claw" mount, very will built and I just like the sound more.

Audix i5 or Sennheiser e905 (use a right angle XLRf plug) on top and a Audix D3 on bottom. Haven't used a 57 on snare in a l-o-n-g time... .

+1 on the e905.  Great on snare, nice and compact.  Articulate and full snare sound.  Never cared for all the work a 57 takes to sound good on snare.  With the e905 I place it properly and on any decent snare it's exactly what the snare sounds like.

I do love the Audix drum clips though unless you've got a drummer with hoop mounted/isolated toms.

I usually have an i5 on the top and a condenser (Rode NT5 / Earthworks SRO / Sennheiser e614) on the bottom.  Works great for me.

Stick with the D1. It's easiest to deploy and sounds just fine.

Another old Soundguy in here turned me on to the Heil minimic for snare, and I haven't had a need to change
