CAT5/5e/6 and Ethernet
« on: June 09, 2011, 08:34:41 pm »

There was an article on the ProSoundWeb recently, Increasingly Vital Links: Ethernet Facts & Options.

The article mentions crossover cables. I'd just like to point out that the crossover cable in the diagram included with the article is not valid for "Gigabit" networks. A different crossover is specified for Gigabit. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable). Note that a "Gigabit" crossover can still be used in a 10Base-T or 100Base-T networks.

Most Gigabit Ethernet interfaces have auto-MDI/MDIX capability, so in most cases it is no longer necessary to use crossover cables when connecting devices without an Ethernet hub or switch.

I have no experience with digital audio devices that use Ethernet signalling; my experience is with computer networks. Your mileage may vary.
