Crown VZ5002 vs. QSC PL380
« on: June 04, 2011, 06:58:38 PM »

I've recently upgraded my foh boxes from (4) EV QRX115's to (4) EV QRX212's. Prior to this change (1) Crown VZ5002 powered all 4 boxes @ 4 ohms/side. With the changeover the 212's would present a 2 ohm load per side; not good for headroom etc..

Here's my quandry: purchase another very heavy VZ5002 or sell the VZ5002 and purchase (2) QSC PL380's. I'm hoping your suggestions can help with this.

I think you have the right idea.

Depending on how hard you push your boxes I think you would be fine with the 2 ohm load. I run 4 qrx212's off of PLX3602 AND a plx1804, bi-amped. Did that today for 7 hours straight outdoors. No problems. Now, when I need the extra headroom I add another 3602 and only run a pair per amp.

One thing to keep in mind is that the PLX and prob the PL will need a good amount of current at two ohms.

Either way you will love the weight savings.

Hi John,

I would start by trying the rig as is.  The MA-5002's were Crown's top of the line of the day and were designed to power 2 Ohm loads all night.  If everything works well, which I think it would, you should be fine without adding a second amp.

We have a rack of PL380's and they have been very solid for us.  With that said, I wouldn't think that they would have much more output watt for watt vs the 5002's.  The PL380's will however off lighter weight and reduced power draw (the benefits of Class D amplifiers).

Also switching to the P380 might leave you starving for the MA-5000's harmonic distortion, it’s less apparent in the QSC 380.

I use a pair of PLX3402s and one PLX1602 to biamp my pair of QRX212s. Perfect match I think.

I think you have the right idea.

The only problem with running a single 5002vz to four boxes is that each box is only seeing about 1250 watts potential power (4 to 2 ohm load doesnt get much more out of this amp, see specs attached)

2 pl380s would add power to the 2000 watts each box is currently seeing (2500 watts stereo @4ohms) instead of nearly cutting it in half.

Edit: Yes, the specs are at 1k, but its a good reference as both manufacturers are printing specs as such

I don't see a problem, the QRX212 is only 600w @ 4ohms continuous.

totally, I was thinking they were 1200 watt boxes for some reason. I was probably thinking of the srx722 as theyre in the same league. I'll agree then and say the macro will handle it.
