New amp for monitors
« on: May 21, 2011, 11:16:10 PM »

I am looking for a new amp for monitors.
Monitors are MRX512m.
Stage volume is not too loud at all.

Looking at QSC GX5 or Peavey ipr 3000.

Give me your opinions.

Not on the list, but I run Xti 4000's with my 512m wedges. Good match IMHO.

Is weight an issue? Budget?
I use PLX1804s on my B rig. Nice and light.
I use PLX3402s on the A rig. Good power but heavy.

If your running passive I have yet to find an amp that beats the QSC PLX1804. For the price it is a great amp!

The CA9 looks great... Don't really wanna pack the weight.
Price is always a concern, that why I was looking at the peavey and QSC GX5.
I also saw some crown xti 4000 I'm the marketplace. That looks like a good option.
I'll have to do more research on the CA9. might make a good amp to run my subs.
Thanks for the replies.
Keep em coming.

Peavy ipr 3000.  I have never used one, nor will I ever.  Crest has been takin over by peavy years ago,  all we see are failures with new crest amps, the light wieght pro series 8200's and 9200's.  So I wouldn't trust a amp that wieghs 8lbs from peavy if it was me, I'll get a used mackie before a peavy.

Qsc, never used the gx 5, but with a warenty, and the past history of qsc being a great company I'd pick that one out of the 2.

Crown xti 400o, My buddy uses 1 of them in stereo on a 15 with a 1'' horn, another bridged on 2 single 18's, and a xti 2000 on monitors, system work great.  Except for the subs, if you have low voltage, or clip the amp, you will know it.

What kinda subs do you have?

gx5 is about 30lbs, ca9 is about 47

I compared a ca9 in stereo at 900watts to a pro 8200 in stereo at 1400 watts,  I've been running ca9's for 15 years, i knew something was up right away with the 8200, it just was not as good, seems like it feel on its face very quicklly.

Subs are EV Eliminator KW 2x18. Running off a qsc 3102 in stereo. Changing the drivers over to peavey low riders.
I need to research the CA9 and see if it will fit. Would like not to pack the weight if at all possible...but if it works better for sound and performance it might be the way to go for me.

I think the qsc1804 would be great for monitors, just haven't found a deal yet.

QSC PLX1104

Wedding/ballroom/SOS rigs very happy using 1104 on monitors.  13 pounds, 9 inches deep.  Lightweight, powerful enough for sensible monitor volumes, QSC reputation to boot.  Up stairs, down stairs, in and out of the van.  If you never need to chain a bunch of wedges together, you're set.  1804 becomes appealing for SOS deployments where a few more watts come in handy, but you still don't need but two boxes per channel.

Oh yeah you're right...the PLX3402s are soooooo heavy :-/ Are you serious? I remember racks of Crest 8001/9001s
