« on: May 03, 2011, 10:58:47 am »

Im shopping for a good Hi-Hat mic. Im trying to use all dynamics on the drum kit. Already going with (2) Heil PR30's for overheads. Any suggestions ?

I use an Audix I5, or Beta 57.

...regular 57... because I'm cheap and like the gain before feedback

Yes, use whatever is handy. SM57 or i5 works fine. I've used an SM58 and even some cheap SM58 copies before for OH and hihat. However,

to get a really decent hihat sound, a condensor is best. In the USA, Mark's EWI condensor mics for about $70 each are a great choice.

How often do you have feedback trouble on a hi-hat mic?

Use whatever you have.  You know at the end of the night no one in the audience is going to say " I loved the band, but the high hat sucked."

I actually liked the sound of the e935 by Sennheiser on hihat.

Not often (there was a reason being cheap was the first justification). But on the occasion, a tiny bar stage will require a bazaar drum monitor placement. Still rarely an issue, but I like to keep the feedback possibilities to a minimum.
