1/14/11 NEW FORUMS ANNOUNCEMENT
« on: January 14, 2011, 11:26:39 AM »

To All PSW Forums Users:

We understand that the community has been experiencing some frustrations over the launch of the new forums platform and we would like to get the opportunity to clear the air, so to speak, so that you can understand what changes are being made and why, as well as what you can expect as we complete this transition over the next month or so.

1. Why are we transitioning to a new forums platform?

We have actually been planning to do this for a few years and haven’t gotten around to it until now. The existing FUD forums implementation has been in poor shape, gotten too big database-wise, and difficult to work with. A simple upgrade to a later version could not be implemented with the data in this condition. Eventually, we would have had a major failure, There has been a lot of band-aiding of these forums since the Huge Universe to EH Publishing days, and it was time to start clean. We also wanted to get the forums onto a more modern platform. We do realize that there are some trade-offs feature-wise, but we think ultimately it will become second nature like the FUD forums are to the community today.

2. Why couldn’t my registration data and posting credibility/history been carried over to the new forums?

The way registration was structured on FUD was that there was an individual registration for each forum, creating a very messy user database full of dups and bad data. For us to convert this would have taken many dollars and a lot of time re-registering 20 thousand plus members, and a good portion of those members being inactive. This will also give us a good opportunity to have a clean member list that contains everyone, in one place.  We apologize for the inconvenience and will strive to make the registration process as painless as possible.

We are looking at the possibility of giving moderators the ability to reinstate credibility for known/trusted members in the near future. We will update this forum once we have a solution.

3. When are the old forums being shut down? Will you still be able to access the old forums?

Right now, the plan is to have the old forums closed off to new sign-ups by mid-February 2011, and then stop allowing new posts by the end February. We may elect to delay this into March as we work with this new platform to get it into a state where the community is more pleased. We will update the community on this as we have more to report.

YES! We are planning to archive the old forums so it will be accessible and searchable from the new forums. We are researching our options right now and we will also inform the community of when they can expect this to happen. We will not shut down the FUD forums until that happens!

We have also added a forum to the Bugs, Comment, Content forum at the top of the page that links to the old forums so you can still easily access them from within the new forums.

4. Do we care about the PSW community?

Of course we do!! We have seen a lot of posts about us not caring about the users here and that is certainly not the case. We are listening and we are going to try to address every “real” concern that we see in the Bugs and Comments forum. We are just asking the PSW community at large to have a little patience, and an open mind. In addition to the technological changes, we are also doing this to bring the forums management in-house and closer to the fold, so we are learning as well.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I appreciate everyone doing their best to keep this community alive and full during this difficult transition. I am optimistic that in the end it will be a good thing. I appreciate your continued involvement at PSW!

-Guy

PS- Some of you may have noticed some strangeness in speed and accessibility of the old forums this week. Believe it or not, it was unrelated to the new forums and was on the server side of things. Talk about bad timing! It looks like it has been resolved.
