Church A/V Magazines
« on: September 20, 2010, 09:17:05 PM »

I did a search and could not find any info. I have been hired by my home church to come on board as the A/V Tech. I will be in charge of all things A/V and keeping us up to date. I was wondering if there were any must have trade magazines that I need to subscribe to. Suggestions and reasons would be very helpful. The magazines do not necessarily have to be directed toward A/V in a church setting. Thanks so much!

Two more excellent resources, published by Hal Leonard Publishing in cooperation with Yamaha:

Check to see if your local library has them so you can decide if you want to buy yourself a copy.

Thanks Christy. I will definitely subscribe to that one because it is free.

Jonathan, I guess I should have mentioned that I am a capable audio engineer, at least in my own eyes. I have been working in and around audio for 7 years now. I am mainly looking for magazines that I can subscribe to that will keep me up to date with A/V trends and new technology. Thank you for the suggestions though!

So are you saying you've served in a similar position for 7 years and have already read the books suggested?

Most people can still learn much beyond just the latest trends and technology.  I've been in audio and AV professionally for over 25 years and "in and around it" for closer to 30 to 40 years and yet both of the books noted are in easy reach on the bookshelf in my office, I just spent most of last week in an audio and acoustics related workshop and I came home to find the latest church audio book I had ordered had arrived.  The more I learn, the more I recognize all that I do not yet know as well as realizing how little I understand about some of the aspects of acoustics, audio and AV in which I have not been that actively involved.

Given that you are about 5 hours away, you might be interested in http://www.wfxweb.com/atlanta, which is coming up in less than two months.

Technologies for Worship is another pretty good one.  www.tfwm.com

Pro Sound News is another good one... www.prosoundnews.com

As is FOH... www.fohonline.com

and lastly... Live Sound International... www.livesoundint.com

The latter three are basically industry standard audio magazines and do not target churches only.  The information is still really good and very relevant.

There are numerous other magazines you can look into depending on what aspect of tech you want.  for example: stage directions, lighting and sound america, videography, Mix magazine, EQ, electronic musician, etc., etc.

Most of the magazines I mentioned are free to US subscribers.  though a few in that last paragraph are paid subscriptions.

Brad, sorry, I did not mean to imply that those books would not be useful to me. They are just not what I was looking for with this post on the forum. I have a couple of books on the shelf that I can go to, if need be. This is off topic, but since you asked, I have been working with audio for 7 years, professionally for going on 5 years. No, I have not read those books, and I am sure I could learn something from them. I do not know everything, by any means. I am sure of that. I just was looking for some trade magazines to read. I will check out that conference you suggested! Thanks.

Jeff, thank you so much. Just what I was looking for.

Live Sound International magazine is my favorite, with lots of real-world war stories told by people in the industry.  Not a lot of fluff.  In short, the editorial thrust has always been to satisfy the reader, not the advertisers.

Mix magazine is also a good read.  In addition to their live sound coverage, you can learn a lot reading articles by the studio guys.

And if you want to really get technical, buy yourself one or more of the encyclopedias covering audio engineering and acoustics.  Lots of good information.  Good to read completely through once, and even better as a reference later.  I can't remember exact titles, but I believe Glen Ballou (sp?) was the editor of one fine volume.

also a good one just for Church leadership in all areas is Your Church:
http://www.christianitytoday.com/yc/

I also use non church magazines like electronic musician:
