a little off topic... where to master CD
« on: September 29, 2009, 02:14:55 AM »

Looking for a place to master praise and worship, female led gtr rock music.

Heard DiscMaker isn't so hot in that department.  Good for graphics and duplication, but their mastering is to be avoided. Duplication seems to be headed that way.

http://www.rodneymills.com/ <--  Although not a brother, to my knowledge, however lots of "internet" praise about him and his "secular" client list is more than impressive.

looking for that DiscMaker "price" ....$500/CD project.

I'm also about 2 hours away from Nashville, but no connections there.

You could check out the Pan Galactic Company.  They are in St. Louis, MO.

www.pangalacticrecording.com

In the interest of full disclosure I do provide free lance recording services to them.  I don't do any of the mastering work and am not employed there full time.

Paul is the owner.  Check out the website.  A lot of very diverse musical styles represented.

I think his charges are right in your ballpark too.

If you want to try DIY, download Audacity and have a ball.  Non-destructive editing gives you every chance.

Tip:

Use the amplify tool, not the normalize.

When it comes to mastering ... DIY isn't usually a good choice.

A good mastering house is worth their weigh in gold.  They work the strangest kinds of majickery to get things louder and better sounding than the average person can pull off.

Also, I've mastered albums that I've mixed before -- and it's just bad news.  Ears get tired, you miss things, yadda yadda yadda.

Dan Shike at Tone & Volume Mastering in Nashville offers good pricing for indie projects, or at least he did as of a year or so ago.  I've heard quite a few of his projects (some major label, some indie), and they've all sounded great.

thanks for the replies.

I had Tom Waltz at Waltz Mastering out of Boston do it.  Did a great job.
