Well, you could start out at the same place you obtained the light board.

You know there is a food chain for these kind of products. The top tier is sold through or recommended by high end consultants, specialist retailers, the manufacturer himself, manufacturer's reps, and installers. This is the high-service and strongest customer support end of the market.

The next tier is composed of the more professionally-oriented full-line mostly web oriented retailers like B&H, Full Compass, Sweetwater, etc. These sources are not necessarily more expensive but their product lines are so broad as to be confusing to some.

Then you have the large retail chains, music stores, and Web retailers like Musician's Friend, Guitar Center, eBay stores, etc. Their lines of technical products are more limited and more oriented towards low prices. There are many exceptions, but they are generally renowned for their clueless sales staff.

There's a great deal of overlap of service levels pricing, brands and models up and down the food chain. Of course nobody can do everything over the phone like can be done on site.

American DJ is part of the lowest tier but has some stuff that reaches up a bit.

Check out BulbAmerica http://www.bulbamerica.com/Dimmer-Packs-26-cat.htm

I've got 2 Chauvet quad dimmer packs and 8 quad dimmer packs from Bulb America. I bought the 2 Chauvets before I discovered BA. Go figure! Wink

If memory serves, the Chauvets can be configured as on-off switches, while the BA packs are just dimmers. That probably doesn't matter to many people, but it is a potentially relevant fact.

DMX is a standard, so any dimmer pack that uses DMX as it's control protocol should work.

Durability is another issue. Some dimmer packs are more forgiving to overloads and short circuits than others.

Better dimmer packs do not create noise in sound systems.

Start with CheapLights.com, and go from there.

I have 2 Chauvets and hate them. One broke just out of warranty, and the other forgets its addresses about every 6 months.

OTOH, I have a flock of house brand dimmers from Bulb America, and they are flawless for all of my incandescent PAR cans.  I paid as little as $40 for a couple of them which is unbelievable given that they have been so good to me.

I do weird things like dim dimmable compact fluorescents and need some work in that area. There are dimmers that work well with them, but the BA house brand units I have aren't among them.

The model I bought from BA a couple of years back does not seem to be identical to what they are selling now, so caveat emptor.

If you don't like the Chauvet, try Elation.  They're a bit more money, but they're not Chauvet.
