Hey guys,
Having rumaged around this forum for the past couple of weeks i've noticed a fair few of you talking about changing regulations that come into effect in 2009.

Being in the UK, and most of you being in America, i'm not quite sure what this means to me. I am unsure as to whether the UK regs will change as well... help please?

I don't think your regulations will change, at least not yet.

However, manufacturers based in the US may stop making wireless systems in certain frequency ranges. Given that the US is a major user/purchaser of wireless in general, you may also see some European and Asian brands following suit, as profitability is obviously what it's all about. If they can't sell as many units in a frequency range world-wide, they may decide to limit their production in that range, or stop it altogether.

yeah very true... does this mean prices may start coming down?

The school i currently go to has a ""talent" show" coming up in a couple of weeks and between me and a mate we are upgrading the schools rather rubbish (everything is behringer except the amp, speakers and cables ) sound equipment as we have both just taken over the sound from the IT techies and we are looking to buy some new handhelds... it looks like we may just end up borrowing some and buy some when the market is stable.

UK regulations and spectrum allocations are changing significantly, albeit at a slower pace than the US. Refer to the UK spectrum authority Ofcom (http://www.ofcom.org.uk/) and specifically their pages on digital TV spectrum changes (http://www.ofcom.org.uk/radiocomms/ddr/). And of course the UK's licensing and coordination authority; http://www.jfmg.co.uk

Also, you should look at the UK's entertainment industry's website concerning wireless mics and the coming spectrum changes; http://www.beirg.org.uk

I'm still confused as to what this means though. Is it safe to say that the allotted frequencies for radio mics in the UK will remain the same, certainly for the next few years until they decide what they are doing with those frequencies?

I don't know the specifics of the UK spectrum re-allocation, however there are a few UK pro audio fellows on the main LAB site (http://srforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/f/2/0/) that do; you'll likely get most of your questions answered there.

Also, you really should look at the Ofcom and BEIRG sites; a little digging and I'm quite certain you'll find relevant information.
