If one uses a DI on electric, he needs a DI with cabinet simulation.  The Radial JDX is on my shopping list.  http://www.radialeng.com/re-jdx.htm

As to mics, preferably something with less proximity effect and presence peak than a 57.  e609 is ok, Audix D4 is good (the to together is very nice), Audix MicroD, AT4050, and many others.  See how each mic in the kit sounds speaking into it at 2" - the one that has the least "punch" and "cut" is the one I'd try first.

If you only have Sm58, take off the round windscreen, volla!, it's a 57. I even confirmed it with a Shure rep.
