Looking for a super tall crank stand
« on: April 14, 2011, 03:20:25 PM »

The basement seemed as good a place as any for this.

Someone has approached me about finding some tall (~20') crank stands - not for lighting or truss - but for a temporary security camera platform and/or wireless access point. So the load we're talking here is single-digit lbs. I'm pretty familiar with Global Truss' products, which top out at 13' before you get heavy-duty... likewise a Genie ST-24 seems like significant overkill. Any ideas?  ??? Maybe someone has seen a similar solution. Almost like those hydraulic towers on live-remote TV vans.

Half of me knows nobody is going to make a lightweight tower that tall - it'd be asking for trouble - but it's worth a shot. They might have to make a 6' mast and bolt it to the top of a ST-132 with some sandbags on the legs... they're just trying to avoid assembling a tower and tilting it up.

Something like that with a portable base would probably be the way to go for less money than a short crank lift. Sound guy trying to solve a non-audio problem.  ::)

Bogen/Manfrotto makes/used to make some pnumatic lighting stand that got up around 20'. I don't see them on their web site right now.

That's pretty much what I remember, perhaps with less extensions.
